Sterling 12v 30 Amp Campervan Motorhome Battery to Battery Charger

What Is a Battery to Battery Charger?

DC Battery To Battery chargers allow you to charge an auxiliary / leisure battery from your alternator whilst driving. They are installed in line between the positive terminals of your campervan or motorhome leisure, and vehicle batteries, (one of which is connected to an alternator, typically the campervan starter battery) and they offer many benefits when compared with traditional split charge systems in campervans and motorhomes, that utilise a Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR) or heavy duty alternator-triggered relay.

Why do I need one in my Campervan?

Without power, your time wild camping in your campervan or motorhome, can be less leisure, and more displeasure. Direct alternator, or split chargers used in a traditional voltage sensitive relay system (VSR) will only achieve around an 80% charge state of the campervan batteries. VSRs simply allow charge to pass directly from the alternator to the campervan leisure battery but, Battery to Battery chargers take the alternator output and boost or reduce it accordingly, to provide a stable voltage output according to a multi-stage charging profile.

This provides a 100% recharge for your Campervan or Motorhome leisure batteries in a controlled way and typically achieves it up to 5x faster than with direct alternator (VSR) charging.

I have a "Smart Alternator" on my Campervan or Motorhome, is this the solution?

In a word, YES. The use of a Battery to Battery charger is the only reliable solution if you intend to recharge a second (Leisure) battery in a modern Motorhome or Campervan that has an ECU controlled or 'smart' alternator (generally Euro 5/6 compliant engines onward).

These have a highly variable voltage output that is often too low to provide a charge or (in the case of regenerative braking systems) so high that it can damage some battery types.

Due to this highly variable voltage Split Charge Relays or Voltage Sensitive Relays (VSRs) are not suitable for use with 'smart' alternators.
