Faqs Camping Toilets And Chemicals

Frequently Asked Questions

Do camping toilets require chemicals to work?

Yes, chemical toilets (portable and cassette toilets) absolutely require the correct toilet chemicals to work properly.

While the toilet’s flush mechanism will move waste from the bowl to the waste holding tank using plain water, chemicals are essential to make the system usable. Without them, you will quickly encounter severe odor issues, blockages, and unsanitary conditions.

What happens if I don't use chemicals in my camping toilet?

Skipping the toilet chemicals will lead to three major problems:

  • Severe Odors: Standard waste holding tanks are not completely gas-tight. Without chemicals to suppress and neutralize gas, foul odors will quickly escape into your tent, campervan, or motorhome.
  • No Waste Breakdown: Toilet chemicals are designed to partially break down solid waste into a liquid slurry. Without them, solid mass will accumulate, clogging the pour-out spout and making the tank difficult and unpleasant to empty.
  • Hygiene & Gas Build-up: Chemicals prevent the buildup of bacteria that produce dangerous, high-pressure gasses inside the sealed tank.

How do camping toilet chemicals actually work?

Portable camping toilets typically utilize a two-part chemical system to manage waste and keep the unit clean:

Chemical Type

Where It Goes

Primary Function

Blue or Green Chemical (Fluid, Sachets, or Tablets)

Bottom Waste Tank

Breaks down solid waste and toilet paper into liquid, neutralizes bad odors, and controls gas buildup.

Pink Chemical (Flush Fluid)

Top Flush Water Tank

Lubricates the rubber seals, keeps the bowl fresh, coats the plastic to prevent "s marks", and leaves a pleasant scent after flushing.

What is the difference between Blue and Green toilet chemicals?

  • Blue Chemicals: Highly effective, traditional formulas that typically use strong biocides to completely eliminate bacteria and odor. Because of their chemical strength, tanks using blue fluids must only be emptied at designated Chemical Disposal Points (CDPs) or "Elsan points" at campsites.
  • Green Chemicals: Environmentally friendly, biological formulas that use natural enzymes to break down waste. They are septic-tank safe, organic-friendly, and are often required by eco-conscious campsites.

Can I use household bleach or disinfectants instead?

No. Never use household bleach, multi-purpose cleaners, or standard dish soap in a camping toilet.

Household chemicals are highly corrosive and will quickly degrade, dry out, and crack the delicate rubber seals and valves (such as the blade seal) inside your toilet. This will lead to permanent leaks, costly repairs, and ruin the unit's seals. Only use formulas specifically designed for portable sanitation systems.

Can I use regular toilet paper with camping toilets

It is not recommended that you use regular toilet paper with camping toilets, this is because the toilet will become quickly blocked up causing serious issues when the time comes to empty the toilet. To counter this problem there are dissolvable toilet paper products available the main one being Thetford dissolvable toilet paper.
